The maze is cut through a standing field of sun hemp, six feet of it in places, in full yellow flower. Dead ends that look exactly like the way out, and bees working the whole thing while you walk it.
Why it is not a corn maze
People ask why it is not a corn maze. The honest answer is soil. Corn is one of the hungriest crops there is: it pulls nitrogen out of the ground all season and gives nothing back, so a field of it has to be fed to stand up. Sun hemp does the opposite. It is a legume, so it fixes its own nitrogen straight out of the air, and when the season is over it gets cut and turned back in, leaving the field richer than it found it.
So the maze is not a decoration sitting on top of the farm; it is a cover crop the farm needed anyway, that happens to be tall enough and pretty enough to walk through first. When it comes down in the autumn it goes back into the ground the flower fields grow out of next spring.
You should know
- Bees are working the flowers. They are busy and not interested in you, but bare feet are a bad idea.
- Full sun the whole way through. Water bottle, hat.
- Strollers will not fit through the paths. Leave them at the entrance.
